It was the news his family were dreading; five years after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour, seven-year-old Evan Leversage has learned that there is nothing further that can be done to help him.

After several rounds of chemotherapy and radiation treatment, it is unlikely Evan will live to see Christmas - a prognosis which has understandably devastated members of his community in St. George, Canada.

Determined the little boy is given the opportunity to celebrate every child's favourite holiday, dedicated members of the community have rallied together in order to bring the festive season to Evan.

Initiated by a campaign group, established by Evan's cousin and called Christmas in St. George, residents were urged to "rally around their littlest hero."

The Christmas event, which is due to take place on Saturday, has the support of over 3,000 residents while members of the public who learned of Evan's heartbreaking journey will be celebrating in spirit by sharing the hashtag #lightsonforevan on social media.

The homes of residents, who want to make this weekend one to remember for the incredibly brave Evan, are already festooned in lights and other Christmas decorations.

Further to this, Evan will be treated to a festive parade boasting dancers, horses and more than 25 floats, in an effort to buoy the spirits of a little boy who has shown nothing but courage in his short life.

Speaking to CBS News, Evan's mother, Nicole, said: "Evan’s been phenomenal through it all. He wants to make everyone happy."

"In my eyes, he's a hero. He never complained of any pain. He persevered through his whole thing," she said as she reflected on her son's response to the town's reaction.

Explaining her community's reason for celebrating Christmas in October, Nicole told Evan: "Because you have a whole town that loves you."

We're wishing Evan the happiest of Christmases this weekend.
