The topic of companies’ attitudes towards pregnant women and mothers has come in for particular scrutiny in recent times, and this latest development has caused quite the stir around the world.

A Chinese company has been heavily criticised for implementing a ludicrous new policy, whereby employees now have to seek approval to fall pregnant.

According to reports, the credit cooperative has already implemented the strict rules, which also state that anyone who conceives a child without the company’s permission can be fined.

The policy, from the Jiaozuo-based company, reads: “Only married female workers who have worked for the company for more than one year can apply for a place on the birth planning schedule. The employee must strictly stick to the birth plan once it is approved.”

“Those who get pregnant in violation of the plan such that their work is affected will be fined 1000 yuan,” management added in the statement.

Furthermore, the memo stipulates that anyone in violation of the strict pregnancy policy will no longer be considered for promotion or awards, while their incentives and year-end bonuses will be cancelled ‘if their pregnancy severely hinders their work’.

The document was leaked to news portal The Paper, which printed the damning policy in its publication. Since the information went public, the company in question has faced major backlash.

Hopefully the reaction will make management – and other companies implementing similar policies – see sense.
