The National Brown Bread Baking Competition is back as bakers all around the country compete to prove their skills.

The competition hasn’t been held since 1973 at that year’s World Ploughing Championship, but now the search is on for Ireland’s finest brown bread baker.

Ireland is famous for its brown bread and together with the National Ploughing Association and Irish Country Women’s Association, the Baking Competition has set out to find the best loaf in the country.

The finals of the competition will take place from September 23rd-25th at the 2014 National Ploughing Championships.

Sponsored by Aldi, the prize for the best baker will be €2000. Prizes between €1000 and €200 will be offered to runners up and finalists, with all county winners getting a prize of at least €100 in Aldi vouchers.

Move over Great Irish Bake Off, it’s brown bread that is the true test of Irish baking nouse!
