Going through a divorce is always a traumatic experience for a family, particularly when children are involved, but one couple has made headlines today for their defiant message.

Shannon Neuman took to Facebook to post a photo of herself and her husband Chris, with the image captured just after they filed for divorce.

While you might be a little puzzled over the joyous looks on their faces, Shannon explained exactly why they are happy about their decision – and it might just surprise you.

“Are we smiling because the partner we chose for forever turned out not to be the forever partner we needed? Of course not. We’re smiling because we have done something extraordinary…We have respectfully, thoughtfully and honourably ended our marriage in a way that will allow us to go forward as parenting partners for our children,” wrote Shannon.

Turning upside-down the images of children torn between two parents at odds with each other, Shannon went on to outline how their divorce is going to be different.

Here's Chris Neuman and I yesterday after filing for divorce! But we're smiling?! Yep, we're kooky like that. Are we...

“They’ll never have to wonder which side of the auditorium to run to after their Christmas concert or spring play, because we’ll be sitting together. They won’t have to struggle with their own wedding planning because we’ll be sitting on the same side of the aisle – THEIR side,” she added.

Confirming that she and Chris had “struggled” and eventually come up with a co-parenting plan, Shannon then asked others to share her post and consider their approach if faced with a similar situation in their own lives.

“Share our message if we can help remind [others] that it’s possible to love your kids more than you hate/ distrust/ dislike your ex (which we have felt at times on the journey, but for the record we do actually like each other),” she finished.

Needless to say, the former couple came in for major praise over their post and approach to this major life event.
