Police in Australia have praised the bravery of an 11-year-old boy with autism, after he was found safe and well having spent five days alone in the wilderness.

Luke Shambrook was on a camping trip with his family at Fraser National Park when he went missing on Friday.

Luke’s terrified parents contacted authorities immediately amid fears that, due to his autism, Luke may not have known that he was missing.

In an incredible effort by locals and the emergency services, a search lasting five days was carried out through dense bush land.

Luke’s family were given hope on Monday when the 11-year-old’s beanie hat was discovered by one of the teams, with the wonderful news breaking this morning that he had been spotted from a helicopter.

Thankfully, Luke was located safe and well two miles from where his family had been camping, beside Lake Eildon in Victoria. Aside from suffering from hypothermia, Luke is reported to be unharmed.

Police have thanked the public for their help in the search, and have praised “courageous, resilient” Luke.

The astonishing moment he was rescued was captured on video, with the subsequent Vine going viral.

We are so relieved and thankful for this happy ending. This story serves to highlight why it’s so important to teach our children about staying safe.
