We’ve heard of parents going to some extreme lengths to make their children happy, but this one is perhaps taking things a little too far.

A court has heard how a father-of-two stole seven snakes to give to his daughter as ‘a birthday treat’.

Daniel Orton stole seven snakes – two boa constrictors and five corn snakes – during a visit to the reptile house in Wheelgate Park in the UK last July.

The 37-year-old, who was with his 12-year-old daughter at the time of the theft, stuffed the animals into his backpack in a bid to bring them home.

Park security were alerted when an employee saw Orton acting suspiciously, and he was caught with the animals in the bag, in the carpark.

Despite initially saying he took them because “it looked like they were about to escape”, Orton admitted to the theft. He was ordered by a Nottingham court to pay £610 in compensation.

His defence representative told the court: “It was a birthday treat for his daughter. He said he did reach in and take two boa constrictors from the vivarium but they were quite small at this stage.”

We can’t even imagine how badly that could have gone!
