If you suffer with a fear of flying know that you are not alone - in fact, Whoopi Goldberg isn’t a fan either. However, rather than letting the fear grip you when you are on the plane, there are a number of things you can do to settle your nerves.

Eat something
Make sure you eat something when you are going long haul. According to the Alpha Airports Group – a UK supplier for airlines and airports - meals can help passengers take their mind off the flight. With this in mind fill up on starchy food but avoid caffeine.

Listen to the safety advice
Many people feel listening to the advice will make them think about crashing; however, knowing what to do in the rare case of an emergency will actually help to calm you down. So focus on the flight attendent and take it all in.

Understand the plane
If you hear a stange noise and it concerns you, don't be afraid to ask the air hostess what it is. Being aware of things and understanding why they happen will help you feel a whole lot more relaxed. If possible, read a book on aeroplanes to help you get a sense of perspective on what happens when you are up in the air. Looking out the window will help you make sense of the motions such as turning, going up or going down.

Bring plenty of entertainment
Make sure you bring plenty of things to keep your mind occupied - don't rely on the aeroplane to have inflight entertainment. Pack a bag full of magazines, books, pens, music and crosswords and try to focus your attention on these rather than the flight. However, if you do experience motion sickness you should avoid bringing reading material.

Talk to people
A great way to help keep your mind off the flight is to talk to people around you. If you are flying with familiy, ask them to keep you distracted during take-off, turbulence and landing. If you are flying alone, strike up a conversation with the person beside you.
