An Bord Pleanála, who were scheduled to make an announcement regarding the new National Children's Hospital by next week, have revealed that they have delayed their decision.

It has been established that the board who are currently in discussion over planning permission for the hospital - intended for St James’s Hospital in the State's capital - have delayed the announcement by three months.

According to The Irish Times, the board cited in correspondence sent out this week that "the complexity of issues in the case" is the reason for the delay, and asserted that the final decision will be announced before May 12th this year.

The proposed project has been marked by considerable opposition in recent years, with many groups insisting that the intended location is far from suitable while others have petitioned for its construction in the grounds of Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown.

As a result of a myriad of delays, the hospital, which was initially due for completion this year, is now scheduled to open its doors in the year 2020.
