Caring for a family member who suffers from a degenerative brain condition can be physically and emotionally draining at the very best of times, so it's no surprise the story of Lu Xincai and his elderly mother has touched the hearts of so many.

Lu, who lives in the Zhejing province of China, is so concerned for the welfare of his mum, who suffers from Alzheimers, that he insists on bringing her to work with him every day.

Revealing that the elderly woman has a tendency to wander off when left to her own devices, Lu felt he could protect her from harm if he brought her to his place of work on a daily basis.

With no one else to care for his mother, Lu gently wakes his mother at 5am, puts her on the back seat of his motorbike, ties a sash around their wasits and makes a very slow journey to the bank where he works as a security guard.

To ensure his mother, whose husband passed away earlier this year, is comfortable at every stage of the journey, Lu drives with extreme caution and at an incredibly slow pace, meaning the 4km journey generally takes the pair up to an hour.

Empathetic employers have offered Lu's mum her own room in the bank to ensure she is comfortable and safe while her son works his daily shift.

Lu considers his story unremarkable and feels his efforts only echo his mum's, saying: "Our mother carried us on her back to the fields when she went to work on the farm and collect firewood when we were young."

Opening up about the relationship he shares with his 84-year-old mother, Lu says: "I was an apple in my mum's eye, and now she's my apple."
