There are so many missing person stories that end in tragedy, and regardless of the specifics, at least one US family can sleep peacefully knowing that their loved one is alive and well.

Lula Gillespie-Miller left her family baffled when, in 1974, she left home and disappeared after welcoming her third child into the world.

Incredibly, a detective has solved the 42-year mystery, locating Lula in Texas. Safe and sound, Lula has been living under a new identity since leaving her Indiana-based home all those years ago.

According to a statement released by authorities in Texas, Lula left her family as “she felt she was too young to be a mother at the time”. She is said to have “signed her children over to her parents” before leaving, and the only contact she had with them after running away was a letter, a year later, with no address.

Lula’s family never gave up hope that they would find her, and their perseverance paid off when a new detective, Scott Jarvis, took over the case in early 2014.

According to reports, Jarvis used the single letter from Lula to put the pieces of the puzzle together and find the mother-of-three.

Lula’s new alias and address have not been revealed to the public, although she is said to have agreed to hand her contact details over to her daughter, Tammy.

Now, Tammy is reportedly hoping to make contact with her mother for the first time in over 40 years.

We’re wishing Lula and her family all the best.
