Following the death of his five children at the hands of their mother, Andrea, in 2001, devastated father Rusty Yates has vowed to move on with his life and reveals he never once blamed his ex-wife, who was diagnosed with postpartum depression and psychosis, for the tragic events which unfolded in the family home over a decade ago.

With incredibly empathy and unwavering dignity, Rusty, in a recent interview, compared his wife's diagnosis and the subsequent events to suffering a cardiac arrest while driving and being unable to protect his children.

Explaining his reasoning, Rusty said: "Because I think of it as akin to...suppose I’m driving down the street in our Suburban with our five children and I have a heart attack and slide over into oncoming traffic and get in this horrible car accident and I’m the only survivor."

While undoubtedly grief stricken by the devastating events of 2001 which saw the death of his five children by drowning, Rusty maintains that his wife was a victim of her diagnosis, saying: "It was a horrific act but I’ve never blamed her for it."

Andrea Yates was found not guilty of capital murder by reason of insanity and is currently under supervision at a state mental hospital in Texas, a ruling which brings Rusty comfort, saying: "For me, it’s sufficient to know she was in a delusional state."

Rusty divorced Andrea in 2004, but maintains regular contact with his ex-wife, with whom he shared four sons and one daughter, by phone and visits her once a year.
