The mother of a 14-year-old girl is campaigning for changes to the mental health service after rescuing her daughter from a suicide attempt over the festive season.

In every parent's worst nightmare, Sally Burke received a phone call from a friend who admitted she was concerned about her friend's daughter following a post she saw on the teenager's Facebook page.

Horrified by the apparent suggestion that her child intended to end her life, Sally rushed through her home and found her daughter, Maisie, attempting to take her own life in the middle of the night.

Maisie, who was diagnosed with autism in 2014, declared her heartbreaking intentions on social media, writing: "This is the end" in a message which raised major concern among and relatives of the Burke family.

Commenting on the incident, Sally insists that her family is in dire need of support in their hometown of Hull, explaining: "I feel like we're trudging through water. I'm fighting and fighting and fighting but there has been no support to help us go forward."

Reflecting on her daughter's struggles, Sally explained that Maisie has been forced to spend time in mental health units more than 60 miles from her family home - an issue which Sally insists needs attention.

Feeling increasingly isolated, Sally reveals that she has given up her job as a teacher in order to care for Maisie because a means of support for the teen has yet to be put in place.

Thankfully, Sally was able to prevent a potential tragedy in her home, but insists every day is an uphill battle, admitting: "It's just about surviving by the day."

According to The Mirror, Maisie has been sectioned under the mental health act at the adult mental health unit in Hull.

We are wishing Maisie and her mum all the best.
