A devastated mother, who thought she had located her 31-year-old son after an 11-month search, had her hopes dashed recently when she learned that the young man she assumed was her missing son was identified as someone else.

Seeing a photo of a young man in the crowd at a Chelsea football match, Lesley Edwards was almost certain she had located her son, Jon.

Reflecting on the moment she thought she had proof her son was alive and well, Lesley said: "We've been searching for him for almost a year now and we've had so many wrong sightings and different twists and turns but I saw that picture last night and said 'God that looks like Jon'"

Jon, who was working as a chef in Portugal sustained a head injury following a fall and then failed to turn up for work.

Concerned that Lesley had gotten her hopes up, the young man's sister contacted the devastated mother to inform her she had been mistaken.

Explaining the impact the disappointment had on her, 54-year-old Lesley explained: "It was upsetting. We were full of hope. I was thinking 'If it is him and he doesn't want to be found I don't mind' At least I would know he was safe."

Recalling the moment she learned it wasn't Jon, Lesley said: "It was kind of the man's sister to get in touch - she even sent me a few pictures so I was sure it wasn't a crank. But it shows the power of Facebook and social media. We will keep searching until we find Jon."

Our thoughts are with the Edwards family as they continue their search.
