According to emerging reports, a 12-year-old British schoolgirl has died following a swimming accident in France.

It is understood that the child was one of 24 students from Wolfreton School in Hull who embarked on the school's adventure holiday in the Massif Central region of France.

It has been established that the child, who arrived in France on Saturday, died this morning after a pontoon overturned  yesterday afternoon, leaving her and a number of other children trapped beneath.

The young girl was eventually located by a lifeguard before being transferred by air ambulance to a hospital in Limoges where she tragically lost her fight for life.

Commenting on the devastating incident, the managing director of tour company Activ4, Steve Scott, said: "We can confirm that a student on one of our trips to the south of France passed away this morning following a swimming incident yesterday afternoon."

Elaborating on the case, he continued: "The owners of the activity centre and senior management from Activ4 are working closely with the local authority and the school to provide all necessary support and assistance."

Eager to assure concerned parents and families, the school's head teacher, Dave McCready said: "Parents of the other children on the trip are being kept fully informed and counselling support is being made available at the school. This support will continue on the return of the group."

Paying tribute to the pupil at the centre of the devastating case, Mr. McCready said: "We are all deeply saddened by this tragic event and our thoughts and prayers are with the student's family at this difficult time."

The school group were due to return home to Britain on Thursday.

Our thoughts go out to all those affected by yesterday's devastating incident.
