A community is in mourning today following the tragic demise of a father-of-three at Poulnasherry Bay near Moyasta in Co.Clare yesterday.

39-year-old Bernard Mahoney is understood to have gotten into difficulties when he was cut off by the tide while tending to oyster beds with three other fishermen.

Mr. Mahoney, whose youngest child is just a few months old and due to be christened that same day, has been described as a 'gentleman' by those in the community of Moveen.

Commenting on the devastating incident, local Fine Gael councillor, Gabriel Keating, said: "The family are well-known, well liked and highly respected in the community. The local people in this very close-knit community will now rally around the family at this terrible time for them and, I hope, will bring them some comfort."

Following an eight hour search by the Kilkee unit of the Irish Coast Guard, the Fenit RNLI and the Kilrush RNLI, Mr. Mahoney's body was discovered on a mud bank by a member of the Fenit RNLI and removed to University Hospital Limerick where a postmortem is due to be carried out.

Cllr. Keating expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased father, saying: "This is a tragic blow for the family and the entire area. There aren't any words really to describe how people are feeling right now."

Our thoughts go out to Mr. Mahoney's family and friends at this devastating time
