A teenage boy, who got into difficulty while swimming in the river Shannon yesterday, has tragically died in hospital.

The 14-year-old is understood to have been swimming near the Athlone Sub Aqua clubhouse when he got into difficulty.

After a fifteen minute search by the the sub aqua club, the teen was pulled from the river with the help of RNLI's Coosan Point unit.

Having initially been brought to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinsloe, he was later transferred to Temple Street Children's University Hospital in Dublin where he eventually lost his fight for life.

Our hearts go out to the teen's family and friends at this devastating time.
