A mother and father of three young children in New Jersey have received some criticism after erecting a road safety sign in their area.
The sign reads: “WARNING If you hit one of these kids because you are speeding you will not need a lawyer.” The silhouette of a gun also appears under the text.
Speeding has been a long-running problem in the neighbourhood, which is home to almost 40 children, but the parents had enough after a car ran over a street sign asking drivers to slow down.
“When the street sign – shaped like a child – was run over, it was like, ‘is this a joke? This has to be a joke,’” mother Gail Rovere told a reporter. “That’s when we and our neighbours really felt something needed to happen.”
Gail says that one neighbour has complained so far, claiming the sign was offensive, but the mum-of-three maintains that was what she wanted to achieve.
“That was the intention, to get people to take notice,” she said. “Drivers have slowed down to read it and, most importantly, we’ve definitely seen an increased police presence in the neighbourhood.”
