Mistakes are oh-so easy to make, especially when you’re a busy mum with 101 things to do in any given day – but the following story serves as a reminder to always be careful when using your cooker.

Residents at an apartment block in the US are heaving a sigh of relief this evening, after being rescued from a fire – caused when a mother accidentally tried to heat her baby’s bottle in oil.

According to reports, Lataya Jefferson had just gotten up out of bed when she headed to the kitchen to warm her six-month-old’s bottle in a saucepan of water. Unbeknownst to Lataya, however, it was not water but OIL inside the pan.

After switching on the stove, Lataya went off to check on her little one – and it didn’t take long for a fire to break out in the kitchen.

“By the time I came back to see if the bottle was warm, the oil had erupted, blew the freaking bottle apart, and the whole kitchen was [in] flames. So I grabbed my baby and I ran,” she recalled.

With no fire extinguisher in the house, it was up to the fire service to put out the fire and save inhabitants trapped on the second and third floors by the smoke.

After arriving on the scene ‘very quickly’, fire crews extinguished the fire and put up ladders to help residents out of the building. In all, two infants and five adults were rescued, and no injuries have been reported.

Thank heavens there was a positive ending to this story.

SHARE to remind a fellow mum to always stock the house with a fire extinguisher – you never know when you will need one.
