The boy who was killed after the car he was driving crashed on Friday night has been named as Jamie Doherty.

The vehicle spun out of control on a dirt road, the Irish Times reports, and the teenager was killed instantly.

The crash happened on a road at Tullyally at Upper Clar on the Inishowen Peninsula.

The 14-year-old, who just finished his second year at Moville Community School, reportedly took the car from his family's home outside Moville and drove it to the dirt road not long before 5pm.

Jamie lost control of the car in the crash. He was the only person in the vehicle at the time and no other cars were involved in the incident.

Garda conducted forensic examinations early this morning.

The boy's remains were taken to Letterkenny University Hospital. A postmortem is expected to take place today.

Jamie was the eldest of three boys. His parents are being consoled by their friends and neighbours during this tragic time.

Our deepest sympathies to Jamie's family, friends, and community.
