Dublin Zoo and The Natural Confectionery Company have announced the names of the new Asian elephant calves after two successful competitions on Facebook.

The new arrivals have been called Kavi and Ashoka – how cute are those names?

The first calf, Kavi was born to mother Yasmin on Thursday, 17th July. Kavi was followed closely by Ashoka who was born to mother Anak on Tuesday, 19th August.

To celebrate, Dublin Zoo and the Natural Confectionery Company, who sponsor the Kaziranga Forest Trail, invited the public to help name the new bull calves taking inspiration from their Indian origin.

Sally Cullen suggested the name Kavi, an Indian word which means ‘poet’ or ‘wise man,’ while Katie Bush chose Ashoka, after one of India’s greatest emperors - very fitting for the youngest member of the herd.

Sally, Katie and their families were on hand in Dublin Zoo this morning to help announce Kavi’s and Ashoka’s new names. To thank them for ‘Letting Their Imaginations Run Wild’, The Natural Confectionery Company has provided them with a four-star hotel break for their families in Dublin, as well as annual pass to Dublin Zoo and a hamper packed with Natural Confectionary Company goodies!

Karl Tyndall, Brand Manager for The Natural Confectionery Company says: “Here at The Natural Confectionery Company, we value the importance of fuelling imagination through learning and play for all the family, so we are delighted to have been able to share the important and imaginative act of naming the new elephant calves with so many Irish families.”
