A glance at social media is enough to show that the Berkeley tragedy has touched the hearts and lives of people all over the world, one of those being world-famous activist and lawyer Erin Brockovich.

Brockovich, herself a mother-of-three, took to her official Facebook page this week to not only sympathise with the families of the Berkeley victims, but to offer her support.

Addressing the company behind the construction of the apartment block where the tragedy took place, Brockovich wrote: “I urge immediate action on the costs for Berkeley families! The company behind the construction of the Berkeley apartment block should take action to ensure that the families of those involved in the balcony collapse disaster are not left with enormous medical bills as a result of the fault construction.”

Describing herself as ‘devastated’ over the tragedy, Brockovich added that she is “available to meet with and assist the families, and to advocate for them to find a non-litigious solution in the coming weeks.”

Brockovich’s statement comes after a new report confirmed that the balcony from which the six students died had decayed to the point of severe dry rot.

The 55-year-old, whose story became famous from the Julia Roberts movie, added: “As a lifelong activist, I feel it is my duty to come forward and offer these families my assistance. For those who did not survive the accident, there is a need for us to uncover the truth about what happened.”

She went on to say that she has partnered with Phelim O’Neill solicitors in Dublin to facilitate assistance to any of the families, should they wish to take her up on her offer.
