Given that the world is now our oyster at the touch of a mere button, it makes sense that our phones have become an integral part of our daily lives – but at what cost.

According to one expert and author, our overdependence on phones and tech devices could be harming our babies’ development.

Dana Suskind, an associate professor of paediatric surgery at the University of Chicago, has urged parents to look up from their phones and switch their interest to their little ones.

“It’s a huge issue. Language in those first few years of life is the food for the developing brain,” she said in an interview this week.

The founder of the Thirty Million Words initiative - referring to the number of words a baby traditionally hears by the time it is four - said that it’s time we tapped back in to what’s going on with our growing babies.

Worried that time spent distracted by tech devices is leaving little ones in silence, robbed of that attention needed to properly develop their brain, Dana has called for change.

She went on to quote research that shows how children’s brains “light up” when they interact with adults.

In such a tech-obsessed age, it’s only natural that something has to suffer while our noses are stuck in a phone or tablet – but is it more serious than we think? This is definitely thought-provoking stuff.
