A heartbroken mother who was reunited with her son after 16 years apart has Facebook to thank for the incredible reunion.

Hope Holland lost all contact with her little boy,Jonathan, before the turn of the new millennium when his father, who was sharing joint custody of his son with his ex-wife, relocated him to Mexico without her express permission.

Recalling the devastating events of the time, Hope told NBC: "His dad was going on vacation and had permission to take him. It was a normal day. I didn't think he was not coming back."

After countless fruitless searches and significant police intervention, Hope resigned herself to the fact her little boy would grow up without any memory of the mother who raised him until the age of three.

However, it seems Jonathan was doing some investigation work of his own and decided to take to social media in an effort to trace his mum and brother, Jacob.

Using the only family photo he had, the determined young man, who was no longer in contact with his father, posted it online in the hopes his estranged family members may see it and recognise themselves.

In a miraculous turn of events, Jonathan's mum became aware of the photo and soon found herself in contact with the son she hadn't seen in close to two decades.

Despite her innate desire to relocate Jonathan to California, Hope quickly realised it wouldn't be as simple as she wished on a account of her financial circumstances.

In an effort to have her son permanently relocated across the border, Hope established a GoFundMe account explaining that her ex-husband offered no support in this regard, saying: "Zilch. Zero, including no financial support, no reunification support, but also, reluctance, resistance to giving me the documentation that I needed just to get my son across the border."

Hope and Jonathan are currently getting to know each other, with his overjoyed mum telling NBC; "I'm happy he wanted to know me."
