While we may think a mere seven seconds doesn't have the potential to change the course of our lives forever, one family from Islington in London learned the opposite to be true following a devastating incident in February.
While cycling his bike with a group of friends, their son and brother, 15-year-old Alan Cartwright, was approached by three youths who ordered the teens off their bicycles.
Upon gaining possession of Alan's bike, 17-year-old Joshua Williams, who was today found guilty of murder, stabbed his victim in the chest before making his escape.
Captured on CCTV camera, police officials were appalled by the savagery of the incident which left a family mourning a much-loved son and brother.
"The entire incident from start to finish lasted no more than seven seconds, but the ramification for Alan and his devastated family will last a lifetime," maintained Chief Inspector Chris Jones, the detective who led the investigation into Alan's murder.
According to BBC News, Joshua, who handed himself into police following the circulation of the incriminating footage, was on bail at the time of the attack, having been arrested on suspicion of carrying a knife.
Commenting on Alan's untimely death, his grief stricken family have appealed to police to increase searches of individuals suspected of carrying knives.
Paying tribute to the young teen, Alan's sister, Cherrie called him 'the best brother', saying: "We wouldn't change him for the world."
18-year-old Shaquille Roberts and an unnamed 17-year-old boy previously pleaded guilty to robbery.
