The family of a schoolgirl who was raped and murdered in her own home almost 34 years ago have learned that a 56-year-old man has been charged with her rape and murder.

17-year-old Yiannoulla Yianni's body was discovered by her distraught parents on August 13th 1982 after she returned home having spent the morning with her parents in their family shop.

According to police reports, the teenage girl, who was a student at Quintin Kynaston School at the time of her death, entered her home in Hampstead alone where she was subsequently sexually assaulted and strangled by an unknown intruder.
 


Commenting on the case's development. Detective Inspector, Julie Willats of the Metropolitan Police asserted: "Regardless of the passage of time, cases can and will be reviewed for any new opportunities to develop previously unknown lines of inquiry and to follow-up any fresh information which has become known to us."

It is understood a man named James Warnock was arrested on Tuesday before being charged with Yiannoulla's murder last night.
