Farm toys are always a favourite with Irish children! Whether it’s a farm set, ride on or smaller die cast models, children are sure to have great fun playing farmers, as they load up their trailers and scoop up with their tractors.

Aside from the hours of fun they bring, farm toys are great way to educate children through ‘small world play’, particularly for those who have never been on a farm.

According to research published recently, children living in urban Ireland know little about what happens on the farm and how that translates into food on the table. The survey, conducted by Empathy Research, shows a distinct lack of knowledge in urban children who don’t have access to farms about farm machinery, source of food and naming adult animals.

Commenting on the survey, Irene Gunning, CEO, Early Childhood Ireland said: “Farm toys are a fun way to educate children through ‘small world play’ as they role play and mimic the real world around us, and they might be particularly helpful for children who have never been on a farm. While urban children mainly have exposure to farm toys in school, the research indicates that rural children spend time playing with farm toys at home. It is really important that our children understand where food comes from, from the farm to the fork, and the significant role agriculture plays in our country,” she added.
