A father, who was issued a fine for speeding, has expressed outrage that the fine was not cancelled on appeal after he explained he was rushing his five-year-old son to hospital following a head injury.

Paul Moran was caught travelling at 53 mph in a 40 mph zone as he frantically made his way to hospital at the behest of medical professionals.

Having learned that his son, Connor, sustained a fall during a friend’s birthday party, the concerned father brought his son to hospital where he was initially given the all-clear.

Having been told to return immediately should Connor’s condition worsen, Paul hurried back to the hospital when his child showed symptoms of concussion shortly after making it back to the family home in Cornwall.

Acknowledging that his desire to have his son treated resulted in his speeding, 50-year-old Paul insists he shouldn’t have to pay the £85 fine on account of the circumstances.

Opening up about the matter, Paul said: “I was breaking the speed limit but I was doing what any parent would do and I would do exactly the same if the same situation arises again.”

Explaining the urgency of the situation, Connor’s father said: “Connor was being sick in the car and we were incredibly concerned. As we passed the speed camera leading up to the hospital it flashed.”

Having received a fine from the Devon and Cornwall Police, Paul gathered the relevant documentation, including Connor’s hospital admission and discharge correspondence, in a bid to state his case and was astonished to learn that despite the medical emergency he was still required to pay the fee.

Admitting he was disgusted by the decision, Paul said: “I am absolutely furious. I was just doing what any worried parent would do.”

Commenting on the matter, a police spokesman highlighted the danger associated with Paul’s speeding, but stressed that the father has the opportunity to take the case further, saying: “If Mr Moran still feels that his speeding was due to a life-threatening medical emergency he has the opportunity to put this mitigation before a magistrate.”

Connor’s father has implied he may not take that route, saying: “I don't have the financial resources to risk losing in court.”

Thankfully, Connor made a full recovery following the frightening incident.
