The wife and children of a man in his 40s were forced to look on as he was mauled to death by a tiger after climbing the wall of a zoo.

The man is said to have climbed the wall to avoid paying the zoo’s entrance fee of €18 but was killed by a Siberian tiger on the other side.

Horrific footage of the incident was posted on social media by passers-by and it is believed the man’s wife and children were among the crowd looking on as he was killed.

Wildlife park employees are reported to have tried to scare the tigers away with firecrackers but were unsuccessful.

An hour later, the man’s body was finally retrieved and he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

One of the tigers at the Youngor Zoo in Ningbo City, China - where the incident took place - was shot dead during the incident.

The zoo has been closed for a day following the death of the man identified as Zhang.
