The father of gunman Chris Harper Mercer, who went on a shooting rampage at Umpqua Community College yesterday, has spoken of his shock at what happened at the Oregon college.

Speaking to reporters gathered outside his home in Tarzana, LA, the father admitted that he was “just as shocked as anybody else”, but declined to answer any further questions.

Another family member, who was also in shock at the events that had unfolded, told NBC4 that they were “shaking right now.”

“I don't know what to say. He was a nice guy. He put everyone before himself. It doesn't sound right because he wanted everyone to be happy."

The 26-year-old, who died in a police shootout, killed a reported ten people and injured another seven.

Last night, a number of people held a vigil in memory of the innocent people who passed away.

President Obama has also spoken about Thursday's shootings, and called for more gun control.

"As I said just a few months ago, and I said just a few months before that, and I said each time we see one of these mass shootings, our thoughts and prayers are not enough. It's not enough."
