Chris Dodd from Australia who ranks as the fourth-best male high jumper in the country was taking his kids out the car when the unthinkable happened.

Chris, who has been training for the Rio Olympics next year, and his wife Kellie were taking their children out of the car when it started to roll backwards.

The 25-year-old jumped behind it in order to push his four-year-old daughter, Ella, out of the way, but, unfortunately, he was run over.

The athlete was trapped under the car for 90 minutes, but his heroic act saved his youngster, who suffered severe bruising.

Along with bladder damage, Chris suffered spinal and pelvis fractures, and is expected to be out of work until next year. The PE teacher is currently staying in his sister’s house while he waits for his own to be modified to accommodate a wheelchair.

While he will sadly have to say goodbye to his hopes at Rio next year, he is determined to compete again, and has thanked everyone for their support.

“Thank you to everyone for all your support; everyone has been amazing to us. The community have blown us away.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with his treatment costs and so far it has raised an incredible AUS$32,000 (€20,985).
