Earlier this week, we reported the sad news that children are reportedly the main victims of Nepal’s devastating earthquake, and fresh reports today have shown the extent of crisis for pregnant women.

According to various sources, around 50,000 pregnant women are thought to be among the survivors of the shocking natural disaster which befell the country at the weekend.

The concerning figure was released by the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), with a representative listing maternal health services such as antenatal care, safe delivery services, post-partum care and emergency obstetric services as those primarily affected.

The organisation’s humanitarian response coordinator, Priya Marwh, said in a statement: “Many women lose access to essential reproductive health services and give birth in appalling conditions without access to safe delivery services and lifesaving care.”

Highlighting the UNFPA’s concern for these vulnerable women, she revealed that emergency staff members are being deployed to the affected areas, while reproductive health kits are already en route.

“The Fund is particularly concerned about the fate of pregnant women who have been affected by this tragedy, including those who might face potentially life-threatening complication,” Ms Mawrh added.

We hope that all women affected will get the help and assistance they need.
