New figures have revealed that a shocking 125 children a year on average have gone missing from the care of the HSE.

The numbers of children going missing in 2014 at 163 and last year the tally was 137 children.

These figures are gathered from four HSE areas including the West, the South, Dublin Mid-Leinster and Dublin North East.

We await the possibility of further figures, but as it stands the West has the highest number of cases with 188 children going missing between 2012 and 2015.

The information has caused extreme worry with groups such as Barnardos who worry about where these children will end up, in many cases it can be on the streets, exposed to drugs and prostitution.

This adds more negative attention to child services following an RTÉ investigation last week which highlighted cases of children being left in care homes despite allegations of sexual assault.

Following the released figures Tusla has confirmed that 11 minors, some of whom are now over 18, are still unaccounted for.

These figures only represent the number of children reported missing each year and not the number of actual incidents.
