Flying as a family can be expensive, which is why so many parents are no doubt disappointed with the latest announcement by Ryanair this week.

From September onwards, parents travelling with children under the age of 12 will have to pay extra to reserve their little one’s seat.

The current procedure allows all passengers to skip the reservation fee and avail of randomly allocated seating. However, according to a statement posted to the company’s website, trying to re-seat kids separated from their parents under this process has led to ‘boarding issues’.

As a result, one parent in the travelling party will now be required to pay for a reserved seat, to ensure they are seated with that child.

The fee will apparently cost half the price of the normal reservation fee; €4 per flight. There will not be an extra reservation fee on the child’s seat, and it will only affect one of the travelling adults.

In the statement, Kenny Jacobs of Ryanair said: “It will allow families to select their preferred seats at the time of booking, check in for their flights up to 30 days prior to departure, and fly safe in the knowledge that they are getting Europe’s lowest air fares, while ensuring that they always sit with their children.”
