For most people fortunate enough to have met their grandparents, they will know that there exist very few relationships as special as the one which bonds a child to their parent's own mum or dad.

Illustrating the touching nature of this relationship, newlyweds Brian and Lauren Kurtulik insisted their special day wouldn't be the same without Brian's beloved, but ailing grandmother, Peg Mc Cormack.

Determined to make 91-year-old Peg a part of their celebrations, Brian and his new wife Lauren made the decision to surprise the elderly woman before making their way to their wedding reception in New Jersey.

Despite being unable to attend her grandson's wedding in November, Peg made sure to dress for the occasion by wearing the corsage and outfit she would have word had she been well enough to attend, but was completely unaware she would in fact be given the opportunity to share in the newlyweds' special day.

Taking the celebration to her, Brian and Lauren arrived at the rehabilitation centre where Peg was recovering from an injury and spent time chatting with the much-loved family member who unfortunately died just weeks after her grandson's touching gesture.

Opening up about the heartwarming moment which was captured on film, Lauren said: "I walked in first and her mouth flew open. She was just staring at me and then Brian walked in."

Overwhelmed by the surprise visit, Peg, who according to Lauren "
was all dressed up and just hanging out, like she was there in spirit" kept saying: "I have a granddaughter. I finally have a granddaughter!"

The visit, which has attracted the attention of numerous major news outlets, will go down in Kurtulik family history, with Brian explaining: "She lived only a half-hour away and was a big part of our lives growing up. It was such a small portion of the day to trade in for such a special moment."

Brian hopes his gesture will remind the wider public of the true meaning of a couple's special day, saying; "They are about the little moments, the ones that you may never get back. Wedding days are about you and your partner together and the new family you are creating."

We can only imagine how Peg must have felt to have played such a special role in her grandson's big day.
