According to a spokesperson for the HSE, a temporary technical glitch has resulted in difficulties for a number of parents hoping to register their children for the free GP care scheme.

A registration process was activated this morning in order to allow parents to ascertain whether their local GP has signed up to the scheme which is due to go into effect on July 1st, but a high volume of traffic has resulted in a crash.

Acknowledging concerned members of the public hoping to register their child today, the spokesperson asserted: "We have had problems this morning due to the high volume of traffic while people try to register their children."

Speaking to the Independent, she assured all those concerned that the problem is being dealt with, saying: "We have a team working on the issue at the moment."

Parents who are concerned they will miss their chance to register have been assured that this is not the case, with John Hennessy of the HSE insisting: "It's absolutely not necessary to register today, the scheme starts in July so there is plenty of time."
