Horizon West, which is located on the outskirts of Enniskillen in Co. Fermanagh, has been officially opened today due to the tireless efforts of fundraisers over the course of the past six years.

The facility, which is modelled on Horizon House children's hospice in Newtownabbey, was established in order to provide services to families in the west of the province who had previously had to travel in order to seek care and assistance.

The hospice, which received a Royal Seal of Approval from the Duke of Kent, will provide care for children suffering from incurable conditions.

These terminally ill children will again be offered overnight care in the four bedroom facility after the centre bore the brunt of the economic downturn in 2008.

Determined to get the centre up and running again, devoted local fundraisers raised a staggering £1.5 million which has helped to provide certain families with much-needed care and respite,

Commenting on the development, Heather Weir, chief executive of Northern Ireland Hospice, said: "We wanted it to be a place of respite and somewhere people can come and feel safe and cared for but actually leave feeling refreshed and revitalised."

Horizon West was officially opened by Prince Edward - the Duke of Kent.
