Gardaí have released a statement following an alleged sexual assault on a teenage girl in Tallaght, Dublin on Monday afternoon.

According to media reports, the teen, who is believed to be 14-years-old, was sexually assaulted in Ashgrove estate in Springfield at approximately 4pm.

It is understood that the teen was hospitalised following the incident and a Garda investigation into the case is currently underway.

Commenting on reports, a spokesman for the Gardaí said: "Gardaí in Tallaght are investigating an alleged assault that occurred in the afternoon of Monday, 25th January, 2016. The matter is under investigation."

Offering his thoughts on the matter, local Fianna Fail councillor, Charlie O'Connor, said: "Everyone's first thoughts are with the person and their family and it's very important that people cooporate with the gardai. If anyone knows anything, would they please contact the gardai."

The scene of the alleged assault was cordoned off for examination, but arrests have yet to be made.
