An Garda Síochána have revealed that burglaries have decreased by nearly a quarter in the final two months of 2017. The 23 percent fall in crime is thanks to Operation Thor, which was launched in November.

They explained that they needed to take extra measures to tackle burglaries due to the darker evenings, stating that thieves take advantage of the lack of daylight during the winter months.

One area that saw a significant drop was the South East, with a 40 percent fall in the number of reported crimes in December.

The police force explained that Operation Thor consists of “targeted enforcement and preventative activity.”

The operation, which was launched in 2015, has seen a major decrease in home invasions. The Gardaí confirmed that 155 people have been convicted since the launch of Operation Thor.

Assistant Commissioner with Special Crime Operations, John O’Driscoll stated, “The positive start to the Winter Phase of Operation Thor is encouraging and we intend achieving more success throughout the remaining months.”

Despite its success, they are still advising the public to be extremely cautious during the winter months. Wintertime is a peak month for burglaries, but they reassured the public that they are working hard to put a stop to burglaries.

They have suggested that people should “lock up and light up,” to ensure that their homes are protected this season.

The majority of burglaries occur between the hours of 5 pm and 11 pm, however, with the success of this operation, it looks like there will be fewer burglaries occurring throughout the country.
