Gardaí have revealed that there has been a substantial drop in residential burglaries since the launch of Operation Thor. They shared that there has been a 43 percent decrease in burglaries reported in March 2018 compared to October 2017.

The successful operation was launched in October 2017, following a spike in residential burglaries and continued until the end of March 2018.

Residential burglaries fell from 1,427 nationally for the month of October 2017 to 806 for the month of March 2018.

During the first three months of this year, residents have seen a decrease of 25 percent in burglaries, the Gardaí confirmed.

Burglaries are more likely to occur during the winter months, due to the darker evenings. A surge in burglaries of about 20 percent is likely to arise in the winter months, when daylight hours are at the lowest level, in the absence of effective preventative measures.

“We are particularly aware of the vulnerability of older people for whom a burglary can be a very traumatic experience and we are determined to identify and apprehend those who exploit their vulnerability. The positive conclusion to the Winter Phase of Operation Thor is encouraging and we are refocusing Operation Thor for the summer months,” said Assistant Commissioner, Special Crime Operations, John O’Driscoll.

Operation Thor actively targets organised crime gangs and repeat offenders through co-ordinated crime prevention and enforcement activity based on intelligence and the latest burglary trends.
