Gardaí investigating the disappearance of missing man Trevor Deely are examining a site in Chapelizod in south Co. Dublin.

Mr Deely, from Naas, Co. Kildare, was just 22 when he disappeared 17 years ago in December 2000. He was last seen walking home from a Christmas party on CCTV and no trace of him has ever been found.

The last sighting of Trevor was on CCTV from Haddington Road, close to Baggot Street Bridge, in the early hours of the morning on December 8, 2000.

The file on his disappearance has never been closed.

Early this morning Gardaí began searching a three-acre woodland area which leads down to the river Liffey. The search is expected to last at least couple of days, according to The Irish Independent.

His family have been informed of the new search.

Last December, officers from Pearse Street Garda Station started a cold case review into Mr Deely’s disappearance.

They continue to appeal for information as various appeals over the years have not shed any light on the circumstances of Trevor’s disappearance.

In April, Gardaí released enhanced CCTV footage from Haddington Road outside the Bank of Ireland where Trevor worked showing him briefly spoke to a man dressed in black, before going inside to pick up an umbrella.

It’s believed the man is the same person later seen following Trevor along Haddington Road.

It is understood Gardaí have not been able to establish the identity of the man.

After the footage was aired, Trevor’s sister Michelle appeared on Claire Byrne Live, appealing for the man in the video to come forward.

“It's difficult for us to watch. It's a clearer image of someone who spoke to Trevor that night. It may mean nothing, but it's another person who could come forward”, she said.

"There may be something in that snippet of conversation that could be helpful, we don't know.

"We get asked a lot of different things. There's an awful lot talked about Trevor, and people talk about things that may be withheld. There's nothing of substance withheld," she added.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 25 00 25.
