It is understood that four teenagers aged between 16 and 17-years-old have broken out of a children's detention centre in Oberstown, north Dublin

Gardaí were alerted to the incident at approximately 9.30 pm last night and confirmed they initiated a search which involved the Garda Air Support Unit.

According to media reports, the youths assaulted staff with broken furniture and cutlery before making their escape from the site with the use of ladders.

While one of the teenagers has since handed himself over to Gardaí and been returned to the facility, three of the youths, believed to be from Dublin, Tipperary and Cork, are still missing.

According to reports, this is the third group of youths to have broken out of the detention facility.

The centre was established to provide secure accommodation for up to 60 young offenders.
