While we may have been dreaming of a white Christmas, snow in December is a rarity.

It's the early spring months that deliver a sheet of the frozen white fluff, if we're lucky.

According to Met Éireann, some parts of the country can expect snow from Wednesday and Thursday onwards.

"A band of persistent rain will develop in Connacht and Ulster, spreading to other parts, but becoming more patchy,' say the weather experts.

"Clearer, much colder conditions will follow by Wednesday night, but with occasional showers, some turning to hail, sleet and snow, especially in the northern half of the country."

We've been having a suspiciously mild winter, so realistically we all knew it was going to catch up on us eventually.
