Many candidates running for presidential election bring some element of their family life into their campaign, but one governor has been criticised over his decision to use his children in a ‘hidden camera’ video announcement.

Bobby Jindal, the current governor of Louisiana, decided to take a rather unusual approach to announce his bid for the presidency, sharing a video of himself and his wife, Supriya, breaking the news to their children.

The video recording plays out as the family sit around the patio table at their home, with Jindal consistently referring to himself and his wife as ‘Daddy’ and ‘Mommy’ while addressing his children, who are aged 13, 10 and 8.

The scene turns awkward when Jindal’s three children react to the news of their father’s presidency bid with silence. Things get even stranger in a longer version of the video, as he promises them that they can get a puppy if they make it to the White House.

Jindal’s video has faced serious backlash since being posted on social media, with people criticising the governor for appearing to use his children for political gain.

“I have a ‘kids are off limits’ rule in politics…includes exploiting them for your own campaign,” wrote one journalist. Meanwhile, others branded the stunt ‘creepy’, with one of the more humorous tweets reading: “What America really needs is a man who secretly records his kids…”
