Joseph Wilson, who lost his wife, daughter and seven-year-old grandson in a horrifying car accident, has passed away.

The man died one month after his beloved family were killed in a horrifying car crash.

It is understood that Joseph passed away suddenly on Wednesday at his home in Belmullet, Co. Mayo.

A family friend spoke to the Independent about the heart-breaking incident. They said the local community is devastated

They spoke fondly of the late Joseph Wilson, who was better known as Josie, they said, "Josie was a lovely, decent, hardworking family man.”

They explained that Joseph was distraught after losing his wife, daughter and grandson so suddenly, “Nobody can believe what has happened, to have a whole family wiped out in just a few weeks is unbelievable. They will be sadly missed."

The man tragically lost his wife Mary-Ann, daughter Marcella and his grandson Seán on September 11, 2017.

The family were travelling in their car on the N17 close to Claremorris, they collided with a truck that was driving in the opposite direction. It is believed the accident occurred around 1 pm.

Marcella, who was in her 40s, was driving her mother Mary-Ann to a hospital appointment in Galway. They had missed their bus to Castlebar and decided to drive to Claremorris so they could try to catch the bus at the stop there.

Mum-of-four Marcella was recovering from a brain tumour after successfully beating cancer.

She had three older children- nine-year-old Anthony, 14-year-old Kelly and 16-year-old Amy.

16-year-old Amy bravely spoke about her family during their heart-wrenching funeral in September.

According to The Connaught Tribune, she said, “As you know, I lost my granny, my little brother and my mum. I just want Sean, the baby of the house, to know we will always love him and he will be in our hearts and minds forever."

Fr. Kevin Hegarty, said Mary-Ann was destined to be a mother, “Motherhood was at the core of her being. She knew the language of love and she expressed it eloquently in the way she lived."

He described young Seán as being full of devilment and praised Marcella for facing her personal difficulties with ease and grace.

Joseph Wilson's funeral mass took place on Friday afternoon at St Joseph's Church in Binghamstown and he was buried in Cross Cemetery.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the family during this harrowing time.
