A British couple are celebrating this week, after emerging victorious from a court case they brought to prevent their grandchild’s adoption.

According to reports, the unnamed couple – who are in their fifties – only found out about their granddaughter’s existence about seven months after her birth.

At that point, the tot was already in the care of a foster family, who had plans to adopt her.

Keen to take on their now two-year-old grandchild themselves, the couple brought a High Court action calling for the pending adoption to be halted.

This week, the presiding judge ruled in favour of the child’s grandparents, insisting that adoption would not be in the child’s best interests.

Acknowledging the ‘heartache’ the decision would inflict upon the prospective adoptive parents, the judge then ordered for the toddler to leave her current home and move in with her grandparents immediately.

“The case has correctly been described by one of the experts as ‘tragic’ and as ‘very distressing’. It requires, in the perhaps overused phrase, something of a judgment of Solomon,” Justice Bodley said, during closing arguments.

We’re thinking of everyone involved in this case.
