The parents of the little boys who died after drowning in a fish pond yesterday morning have released a statement through the Scottish Police, and thanked the public for their well wishes in the aftermath of the family tragedy.

Mervyn Scott and Sarah Aitken, who lost their sons Shaun and Rhys after an incident in Dalgety Bay this weekend, began by saying: "We would like to thank everyone for their support at this unfortunate and difficult time."

Paying tribute to all those who assisted them over the last two days, they continued: "Special thanks to all the medical staff, family, friends, neighbours and the police for their efforts, hard work and time spent helping and trying to revive our miracle babies."

Honouring their little boys whose tragic story has touched the hearts of millions this weekend, they continued: "Both boys were long-awaited little soldiers who were full of love, happiness, fun and cheek. Individually and together they have touched the lives of everyone they met."

Understandably horrified by the events which played out yesterday morning, the twins' parents concluded their statement by saying: "We along with our family and friends are still in shock and devastated at such a tragic loss from such a 'freak' accident. They have been taken from us far too early and will be forever missed and loved."

In order to come to terms with their devastating loss, Mervyn and Sarah have requested privacy as the navigate the next stage of their journey together.

It is understood that the scene remains cordoned off with police tape and officers are currently standing guard at the front of the home.
