There have been numerous reports of dangerous social media crazes that have threatened to claim young lives, and one mother has urged parents to monitor their kids’ online activity following her own son’s tragic death.

Latrice Hurst, from South Carolina, is mourning the loss of 11-year-old son Davorius Gray, who was reportedly found dead in his bedroom after taking part in the ‘pass-out challenge’.

The ‘pass-out challenge’, also known as ‘hangman’, sees children choking themselves until they pass out, and it has swept social media, with kids daring their friends and online acquaintances to participate.

Following the shocking tragedy in her home, Ms Hurst issued a statement warning parents to monitor their children’s social media activity and be vigilant to any dangerous ‘trends’ they could be participating in.

Sharing the statement via her family’s pastor, Mark Pangel, Ms Hurst warned of the dangers of the internet to young, vulnerable children.

“If I could rewind time, I would go back and heavily monitor his use of social media, YouTube, and the Internet. I would just say, I don’t believe young people should be on social media, and it should be limited to adults, or at the very least, with extreme adult supervision – where the parents can see everything that takes place on the site,” she said.

She went on to describe her son as a ‘prankster’, who ‘loved life’.

Authorities are now investigating Davorius’ death.

Our hearts go out to the family at this very sad time, and Ms Hurst’s message should be heeded by every parent.
