The most devastating life experiences can teach valuable lessons to those around us, and this is the inspiration behind one distraught mum’s open letter this week.

Destiny Mentia lost her husband Corey and their 15-month-old son Parker last year, when their car was struck by drunk driver Shanna Cook.

The incident occurred when Cook swerved unexpectedly on a highway, moving onto the opposite side of the road, smashing head-on into the Mentias' vehicle.

A year after losing her loved ones in the devastating accident, 22-year-old Destiny has warned people of the dangers of drink-driving in a heartbreaking open letter on Facebook.

“Little did we know, in a few short minutes, everything would change. This would be it. Everything we would have ever known would come to an end, and not by choice,” wrote Destiny.

Putting her heartbreak into words, she added: “One selfish decision to drink and drive caused me to be a widow and a mom to an angel at the age of 21. She [Cook] has caused many nightmares with the news of various reports being released, such as an autopsy of my baby being sent to me, or many reconstruction pictures. Many things a 21-year-old should never have to see or imagine. She ended any dreams we may have had together and caused pain I never knew existed.”

She went on to urge people never to drink and drive, and to save lives by ensuring loved ones don’t make the same mistake, either.
