By now, we all know how dangerous it is to use your phone – even for just a few seconds – while driving. For those who believe they can multi-task, however, Kim Crous’ story will prove you wrong.

Kim lost her eight-year-old son, James, in a car crash – caused when she took her eye off the road to glance at her phone, momentarily.

Kim appeared in court in New Zealand this week, to plead guilty to charges of careless driving causing death and injury.

The tragic incident took place on 21st April this year, as 38-year-old Kim was driving through her native Hawke’s Bay with her two kids, James and Emma.

Kim told the court that she had just come off a roundabout when she ‘took her eye off the road’ to glance at her phone, to consult Google Maps.

In that split-second, Kim’s car careered into a queue of vehicles lined up due to nearby roadworks.

James, who was sitting directly behind Kim, broke his neck on impact and died at the scene of the accident.

Kim was later charged with one count of careless driving causing death, and two counts of careless driving causing injury.

After pleading guilty to all charges this week, the devastated mother is set to return to court in January, for sentencing.

We’re thinking of the entire family at this difficult time.
