A lot of the time, our smart devices are glued to our hands. Indeed, many mums admit to catching a quick time-out by scrolling on the sly while their kids are distracted.

However, research from the UK has now revealed the true extent of how reliant families have become on electronic gadgets: nearly half of households with children admit they regularly text each other when they're all at home in the same house.

The study was carried out by insurance company, Aviva, and shockingly it also reveals that one-in-ten people do not own a single book. This figure rises to one-in-five among people aged 18-24.

Previously, research - which draw on habits in the UK but would also be reflective of trends in Ireland - has indicated that households with children boast, on average, a total of 11 electronic devices - including the likes of phones, laptops, and tablets.

World Book Day 2015 report furthermore highlighted that more than a third of parents admit to confiscating one of their children's electronic items or turning off the Wi-Fi as punishment for bad behaviour.

The National Literacy Trust, based on a survey of 18,000 youngsters, reckons that a third do not have books of their own.
